August Art

It's a hot month, but we've got some really cool art, by one of our loveliest and friendliest of our customers: Phillinda Roy.   More about her:

Primarily, I'm a photographer.  I obtained my bachelors degree in photojournalism at The University of Texas at Austin in 1996.  While studying photography, I learned the art of color correction, photo-manipulation and graphic design.  My first job out of college was at the Austin American-Statesman where I perfected the skills of color correcting and photo-manipulation using PhotoShop.

Over the years, I have lived in Miami Beach, Florida, and various cities in Texas, where I tried to make a living as a photographer or a graphic designer.  i have always taken the time to hone my skills in PhotoShop, whether it was going to workshops or taking online classes.  In 2002, I took an online course and I realized that I could use my knowledge to create paintings from nothing in PhotoShop.  Creating my first works in 2002, I had surprising and pleasing results.  I was amazed at the different textures and lighting effects I could achieve.

My inspiration for my paintings comes from what I perceive in my dreams and from my daily meditation sessions.  I feel PhotoShop is the best medium for me at this point, to capture exactly what I see with my mind's eye.

And her mind's eye captures interesting images.  Several of her pieces have already been sold at Te, some come by some day this month to see the abstract art of Phillinda Roy, and maybe choose a piece to take home with you!  View some of her sample art on our Exhibits page.

Events this Weekend

This Friday, as with every Friday, it's tango night at Té!  Come to dance or come to watch. Savor the evening with empanadas and mate from Argentina, or enjoy any of our other foods and tea - crepes seem to always be a favorite of the Friday evening crowd.

• Friday, Téngo Tango - every Friday night from 9 pm to midnight.

This Saturday, enjoy some live music: jazz and blues, and perhaps a guest folk guitarist as well.  Té's very own jazz & blues band will play from 9 pm to midnight.

• Saturday, Live Jazz & Blues - 9 pm to midnight.

Té in the Movies - ready for the answer?

Well, we'll tease you a little bit more on this.  So far, several visitors have ventured an answer to our last Te Takes poll: "In which movie does our tea house building (when it was still a laundromat) appear?"  So far, the number one answer is Reality Bites.  This filmed-in-Houston movie - featuring the directorial debut of Ben Stiller, and excellent acting from Winona Rider, Ethan Hawke, Janeane Garofalo, Renée Zellweger, and Ben Stiller himself -  does indeed have several scenes filmed close by.  In fact, real estate agents still like to advertise a row of houses along West Dallas as the "Reality Bites Row".  And yes, there is a laundromat scene in the movie.  But, guess what?!  It's not our tea house building!

So, I've eliminated one answer, maybe you'd like to guess again??
